Our Program
The master's option in Literary Nonfiction at the School of Journalism and Communication offers an intensive, seminar-rich curriculum for writers serious about themselves and their work. We specialize in working with experienced writers who blend a sense of professionalism with a desire to take risks. We are interested in both the art of writing -- and the business of publishing.
The two-year residential program includes writing and reading seminars with our full-time writer-teachers, intensive workshops with notable visiting writers and a full range of electives within and outside the School of Journalism and Communication.
Our full-time writer-teachers are productive, award-winning writers as well as dedicated teachers.
Our innovative series of "Writing about..." workshops are led by some of the most talented literary nonfiction writers in the country. Each workshop features three days of creative challenges and intellectual rigor followed by independent work that culminates in a significant piece of writing. Recent and upcoming workshops have included:
Writing about... roads with Ted Conover, Pulitzer Prize finalist and winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award
Writing about... big things from small places with magazine journalist and two-time National Book Award finalist Melissa Fay Greene
Writing about... politics with essayist, naturalist and environmental activist Terry Tempest Williams
Writing about... crime with Pulitzer prize and PEN Award-winning author Edward Humes
Writing about... American life with award-winning author and New Yorker contributor Susan Orlean
Writing about...history with best-selling author and former Wall Street Journal reporter Erik Larson
Writing about... children with award-winning author and former Wall Street Journal reporter Alex Kotlowitz
Writing about... poverty with essayist, journalist and author Barbara Ehrenreich

We are located on one of the loveliest university campuses in the country, an hour from the Pacific ocean, an hour from the peaks of the Cascade mountains and minutes from dense fir forests and swift, clean rivers.
